“It is my great pleasure to announce that the cooperative agreement for High School Hockey between Grand Haven Public Schools, Spring Lake Public Schools, and Western Michigan Christian High School for the 2023-2024 season is official,” said WMC Athletic Director Ryan Slack.
It is part of the mission in the WMC Athletic Department to provide the best possible athletic experience to students. Part of that is to be able to provide opportunities for students to participate in the sports that they desire. Over the past year, WMC has been evaluating the desires of students and learned that there is great interest in ice hockey within the student body. With this learning, WMC asked God to guide in the navigation of schools that would be a good fit for an ice hockey co-op. With much prayer and consideration, the athletic department reached out to Grand Haven Athletic Director, Taylor Schriber, to see if there was mutual interest in a proposed co-op. “After seeking advice from area schools, board of directors, and affiliate conferences, we decided to proceed with the process of making this co-op official,” said Slack.
WMC Principal Chris Ruiter shared his excitement for the new program, “We are thrilled to announce the opportunity for our students to participate in high school hockey. This partnership will deepen our rich sports history. Hockey is a sport that unites individuals on a competitive level while building skills for life and living. I look forward to seeing our students competing on the ice and vying for championships at this level.”
The Grand Haven High School boys hockey team is under new leadership this year. Scott Compton is taking over as head coach of this newly constructed co-op for hockey. This program calls the Lakeshore Sports Center in Norton Shores their home for all practices and home games. With that being said, the future is bright for hockey within the WMC community as well as for students from Grand Haven and Spring Lake. WMC is thankful to be able to provide this opportunity for our students and to further expand WMC athletics. Practices will begin October 30 with the season beginning November 13.
