WMC Names New Cross Country Associate Head Coach

Laura Scholma will be the Cross Country Associate Head Coach beginning this fall.

Coach Scholma’s previous coaching experience includes Calvin University XC (Men’s/ Women’s assistant) 2003-2014, WMC Track and Field (distance) 2003-2010 and Spring Lake HS XC (Girl’s Assistant) 2016-2018.

WMC Athletic Director Ryan Slack is excited to have Coach Scholma as a part of his staff, “We are incredibly excited to have Coach Scholma join our cross country coaching staff as an associate head coach of the program. With Laura’s former coaching experience at Calvin and her commitment to the WMC Community, I am confident that she is the right leader for this team.”

Laura joins the Cross Country coaching staff as an experienced runner, “Although I ran track in middle school and high school, I didn’t participate in XC until I was a sophomore at Calvin College. In my first year I ended up an alternate on a team that won an NCAA Division III national championship….what an introduction to a sport that has captured my heart in so many ways! I continued running for Calvin for the next 3 seasons, helping the team qualify for the national championships each of those years and ending up with a PR of 18:20. She is excited to join the Warrior coaching staff, “I love to see an athlete realize that they can achieve more than they ever thought possible when they are part of a team setting out accomplish a goal rather than trying to do it on their own. Just as the body of Christ is more than it’s individual parts, a team working together is so much more than the sum of its individual members. Witnessing athletes work out what that means on their team from year to year never gets old! The trust and humility required in chasing big goals as a team also fosters personal and spiritual growth which will help guide them as they live out the rest of their lives wherever God places them. It’s not hard to be excited about watching God at work in the lives of athletes who are striving to follow Him.

Warrior Cross Country head coach Greg Gould is pleased to have Coach Scholma a part of the program, “Excited and blessed are the first two words that comes to mind about having Coach Laura Scholma join the cross-country teams this fall. She brings an incredible wealth of experience as an athlete and coach, at a variety of levels, to these teams. Her passion for the sport, the mission of Christian education and WMC will be evident to the student athletes and their families. She will make the teams, and myself, better on and off the race course. I am excited for the athletes to get to know her better during the pre-season and as we start official practices and competing in a matter of weeks.”

Coach Scholma and her husband Josh, WMC guidance counselor, and their four children, Josiah, Micah, Ezra and Chloe, reside in Spring Lake.
